CHAPTER SIX
In The Dead of Night
The Commandant of Brothels met Renee in the library of the houseâanother sunny room, not some dreary menâs study with thick, gargantuan furniture and gloomy bookcases covering the walls. Madameâs library was more genteel, offering several floor-to-ceiling cases of hardbound and paperback books⦠some dating back well into the 19th and 20th Centuries. She loved the smell of the room, the perfume of paper and glue and printing ink, which though faint now, still roused her imagination and romantic spirit. She particularly liked the words of Henry James, Jane Austen and the erotica written at the turn of the 21st Century. The more graphic and extreme the better. She had kindred spirits in those times⦠a fact that soothed her occasionally befuddled spirit.
She met the Commandant while wearing her slave collar and a rose silk wrap dress with a plunging neckline and a sweepy skirt that reached past her knees. She appeared to float as she moved gracefully into the room. It was a cool clear morning with a breeze coming through the windows from the West.
âGood day, sir,â she said politely with a faint smile on her lips. They were blushed with rose lipstick, as were her cheeks.
âI donât like to be kept waiting,â the Commandant answered her brusquely.
âMy apologies⦠I was rather tied up this morning.â
The man let the pun escape him and moved on. âYouâre lucky, Madame, that weâre not staying a week,â he said as he inspected Renee from head to toe, âbut you can expect a steady flow of soldiers at your door.â
âThen weâll make them welcome.â
He looked surprised. âMy, what good spirits. Perhaps this life suits you.â
âIt will have to, I believe, since you are in charge. If there is anything Iâve learned in the last few years, it is to make the best of any arrangement.â
âThen youâre more accommodating than you were last night.â
âLike my sisters in this brothel, I was well taken last night. Iâm woman enough to acknowledge the benefits of sexâeven if itâs not the variety I prefer.â
âI would say that bondage and whipping suit many womenâyour cousin, I believe, is a good example.â
âFor some, but not most. For most, such acts are hardly sexual.â
âMost soldiers are not connoisseurs of pleasure, they simply want to vent their frustrations and give their bodies some sexual satiation. As long as this brothel provides that, you will stay in business. The Command will ship you enough food to keep the women fed. You have enough amenities here to supply the rest.â
âAnd is there someone I can turn to if we need more supplies?â
âI will be here from time to time; you can make your requests then. But understand that weâre not in the business of establishing a lavish brothel, but simply a place for men to take their baser inclinations.â He sighed showing his exasperation. âUnfortunately, the animal desire to copulate with women is a reality we must deal with.â
âDoes that mean you donât enjoy women yourself?â she wondered aloud.
